Cruelty-Free Makeover & Wild Hair Contest
Two Free Events at Essene Market
December 9th, 2006
Thanks to everyone who attended our Cruelty-Free Makeover & Wild Hair Contest at Essene Market & Cafe! Folks had a great time receiving makeovers from Cheryl Baldwin and Mary Finerty of Communitas Holistic Healing Center and Sondra Rosenberg representing Essene's cruelty-free cosmetics. Everyone received a cruelty-free shopping guide and valuable information about animal testing in the cosmetics industry from Vicki Katrinak of the American Anti-Vivisection Society. Some people won raffle prizes, including free hair cuts from Juju Salon & Organics which specializes in cruelty-free products. A few daring souls left with a rainforest, an ocean, a zebra or a caged bunny in their hair, thanks to hair sculptor of Julius Vitali and his lovely assistants, artist Tina Paul and Beth Ann Vitali!
A selection of photos from the makeover may be viewed online within Ali Bukhari's Web Albums. Be on the lookout for additional web albums as well as an online slideshow containing the event photos.

Blessing of the Animals
An Arts-Based Ceremony
October 8th, 2006
Our second annual Blessing of the Animals
Ceremony & Community Drum Circle on October 8th was a
resounding success! Participants honored their companion animals and
animals around the world through drumming and dancing in The
Grove at the Unitarian Society of Germantown. Companion animals
received Reiki, acupuncture and flower essences at the Healing
Booth, while their humans visited tables offering information about
local animal issues, cruelty-free products and delicious vegan food
by The Nile Cafe and V is for Vegan. A great time was had by all!
Musicians Bob
Pyle, Jim Harris, Martha Michael and Lynda Chen entertained everyone
before and after the Ceremony. During the Ceremony, Margaret
Motheral called in the Spirit of the Animals from the Four
Directions. The One Nation Ensemble, led by Lonnie Davis, performed
four healing drum rounds for health & happiness, gratitude,
compassion and harmony. Stephanie Zukerman led the animal spirit
dancers as they bestowed the communal blessing. Animal bereavement
counselor, Sandi Herman, shared her wisdom about the grieving
process and Tammy Fouler recited a poem. Nelson Lau was our on-site photographer.

The Human
Circus
"The Kindest Show on Earth"
May 21st, 2006
Thanks to those who supported our most recent production, The Human Circus, which featured entertainment by jugglers, magicians, dancers, mimes, musicians, singers and storytellers. This original play, written by Jim Harris and directed by Meghan Heimbecker, offered a glimpse into the history of the circus and the mistreatment of exotic animals like elephants, lions and bears with a heartwarming message of compassion for animals. We will post a video of the production online soon. We hope to bring this performance to schools in the future.
Carmen Martella III,
Susan Ricca, and
Philip Jacobson were among a few of our favorite performers.
Created by local Philadelphia artist Gary Bernard, the beautiful full-color 18x24 poster commemorates The Human Circus. The poster is still for sale online, while quantities last, for $10, including shipping. Please click on the PayPal button below to make a secure payment online using a credit or debit card.
